July 29, 2018 in St. Petersburg hosted Russia's qualification track cycling tournament that determined Russia's team roster, which would compete at Glasgow 2018 European Championships.
At the national level, Diana Klimova and Gulnaz Badykova, who won medals in the Olympic cycling discipline of Madison, were named to compete in the women's Madison at the European Championships.
Former world champion Arthur Ershov came second in the omnium event. Maxim Piskunov showed the best result in the scratch race. Both of them were qualified for the European Championships to compete in Madison while Piskunov is also set to compete in the scratch race. Another Marathon-Tula team's cyclist Victor Manakov, who at the national level in tandem with Vladimir Ilchenko came third in Madison, will also travel to Glasgow.
From the team's sprint group only Alexander Dubchenko qualified to partake in Glasgow 2018 European Championships. He won a silver medal in the cycling team sprint event and was a step away from victory in keirin and in the individual sprint race. He was chosen as a reserve cyclist for the European Championships' team sprint tournament.
We shall remind that last season at its first European track cycling championship Marathon-Tula team won a silver medal when Maxim Piskunov came second in the elimination race.
"This season our guys have already won several significant awards as a result of their hard work, coaches' efforts and opportunities offered by the club and Tula region's leadership. I am very glad that our comprehensive plan aimed at bringing up champions delivers tangible results," Alexander Vinokurov, the President of Marathon Group and Marathon-Tula cycling team, said adding that it won't not be easy to compete in the United Kingdom that is well known for its commitment to cycling. He wished his team a lot of luck stressing that the club would be supporting them. "I am convinced that the team can count on top awards," he concluded.
